Raya and the Last Dragon movie review (2021) | Roger Ebert

Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon has action, heart, and a new character. The animated movie is set for theatrical release on the 5th of March 2021. While the movie will also be available with premiere access on Disney Plus.

Most Disney films remind a young princess alone embarking on a dangerous journey and become a hero; Raya and the Last Dragon give a different take on a Princess going alone, which definitely comes with inherent dangers. This comes as a smart move for quickly growing and transitioning princess with a clear lot to early release like Frozen.

Unlike the predecessor, the character and plot have are akin to what we saw in Moana and Frozen. Raya is a character who takes on the open-world journey. Emotionally not open, but filled with self-confidence and a skilled fighter. The story takes a classic turn in the land of Kumadra.

The villainous Drune capable of turning everything into stone. The last dragon pool its power to revive human begins. During the process, when the power is pooled in dragon gem, it leaves them frozen in time, but Sisu. As the Dragon Gen shatters, it brings Drune back into the world.

Raya And The Last Dragon: Release Date, Story & Disney+ Premier Access

Since Raya’s character is a little emotionally off, the journey advances with challengers to make friends and rely on them to fight together. Trust tends to be central to the movie’s story, and the supporting characters had allowed their role and presence.

So, that’s something that instills a belief that the animated action-adventure has a different format. As Raya and the Dragon make their way through Kumandra, the relationship strengthens. Raya’s childhood friend turned foe Namaari comes face to face with Raya.

Grief also remains central to Raya and the Dragon. The characters have a backstory where the princess has lost someone close to the family or friend. That’s what serves as motivation in Raya and the Dragon. They both suffered tremendous loss, and their relationship depending on one another, and forming a family is meaningful.

Raya and the Dragon is Disney’s first animated movie to feature not one but two Southeast Asian princesses capable and determined for their friends and family. I’d say this is an animated film that I thoroughly enjoyed within a little amount of time.

Raya and The Last Dragon hit theaters and Disney+ Premiere Access on March 5th, 2021. How will you be watching it?
