The Avengers never happened…in the new series event Heroes Reborn! To celebrate the series, Marvel has announced new variant covers by award-winning Native American artist and writer Jeffrey Veregge. The collection of covers will give readers a unique look at the new Marvel Universe with depictions of Hyperion, Blur, Doctor Spectrum, and more in Veregge’s iconic Formline style.
Personally, I am a huge fan of Veregge, who is part of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe. Being Native myself, it has been a treat to see his Native-inspired artwork gain such high regard in the comics medium. I even have a tattoo of some of his artwork.
Coming in May, a new vision of the Marvel Universe will take shape in Heroes Reborn. From the minds writer Jason Aaron and artist Ed McGuiness, this series will present a world without the Avengers where the Squadron Supreme had to rise up to take their place.
“My first real encounter with Squadron Supreme as a reader came back in the late ’90s with the immortal storytellers Kurt Busiek and George Perez and their run on the Avengers. Knowing all who have worked with these characters before me and the history of Squadron Supreme made this opportunity truly special,” Veregge said. “Being able to share their stories in the same spirit and voice as my ancestors for today’s audience is not only an honor as a Native American storyteller, but as a comic book fan as well.“
Welcome to a world where Tony Stark never built an Iron Man armor. Where Thor is a hard-drinking atheist who despises hammers. Where Wakanda is dismissed as a myth. And where Captain America was never found in the ice because there were no Avengers to find him. Instead, this world has always been protected by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Squadron Supreme of America. And now the Squadron face an attack from some of their fiercest enemies, like Dr. Juggernaut, the Black Skull, the Silver Witch, and Thanos with his Infinity Rings. Blade is the one man alive who seems to remember that the entire world has somehow been… reborn. And so begins his search for the cause behind this ominous shift in reality.
