Besides Todd Batoo’s Killing Joan, Katarina has appeared in a plethora of things. From the WWE as Katie Lea Burchill to the TV series Emergency: LA. She was also in the films Karate Kill and Sickness. She will also be starring in the movie Redcon-1.

How’s 2018 shaping up so far for you?

Excellent actually, thank you for asking..!  I have been keeping very busy performing and have some exciting new developments up in the pipeline as well…

Is the film one of the highlights? Some nervous excitement as the release date approaches?

It is absolutely set to be a highlight!  I have been waiting for this film to come out for a little while now and I am certainly looking forward to people being able to see it.  I wouldn’t really say nervous, as I have seen the movie, and loved it- so the excitement here can happily stand on it’s own. 😉 I really think we will be getting a good reception and perhaps a nice little following out of it.

How long ago did you shoot it?

Oh, a few years ago now.  It was 2014, I believe.

Where was it shot?

It was shot on location here in Los Angeles.  Todd Bartoo, the director, found some really wonderful and evocative places to shoot which really adds to the production value and overall look of the film.  It mixes just the right amount of grit with slick interiors, as well as great lighting and cinematography courtesy of our DP Jon Schweigart to give it a great, underground feel.

What was it about the film – character, story, location? – that had you chomping at the bit to be a part of it?

I guess all of it!  Of course it begins with the story- there is a great, unusual twist right off the bat and then it unfolds from there.   I am drawn to dark stories and characters, so I was immediately on board with this.

What scared you as a child?

Wolves mainly.  I don’t know why, but I used to wake up and think there was a wolf in my room.  It scared me terribly and I had to call for my mom to put the light on.

What scares you now?

The telephone…  I have a bit of a phobia.  I used to think it was really weird, but apparently, a lot of people suffer from this affliction..!

What’s the last film that scared you?

All and any horror movies!  I can’t watch them at all…

[Jamie Bernadette talks Killing Joan and 4/20 Massacre – SFM Exclusive Interview]

When it comes to horror movies, is the old adage true ‘they don’t make them like they use to’?

I guess, sure, because everything in life constantly changes, so that would be true for movies as well- as we adapt, discover and find inspiration in new techniques or stories.  But I don’t think necessarily that makes them better or worse. Just different.

How do you think your film differs from the rest of the genre films currently out there? What does it do differently?

I would say that this film is a canny blend of several different genres- part thriller, part horror, in some parts even romance or drama- but without feeling watered down.  Rather, I feel that in this way it has found the strength of its own voice rather than following a formula of some sort, which also makes it very powerful. I think that the audience will enjoy it very much.

Have you any more horror or sci-fi films on the way?

I do- I shot a film entitled ‘RedCon-1’ in 2016 with director Chee Keong Cheung which is a pretty epic zombie movie with a whole lot of action in it.  I play one of eight soldiers that move out into the ‘infected zone’ to find this doctor who supposedly has a cure… Post-production is complete and I will keep you posted on a release..!
