People play games for various reasons. Some may wish to delve into the latest new title hours after its release. Others play for nostalgia’s sake. Others simply love a particular world or gameplay style and wish to further explore the in-game world via downloadable content and mods. Here are four of the most memorable games that have withstood the test of time and are still enjoyed by gamers today.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
“Morrowind” is the third “Elder Scrolls” installment released in 2002 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox. The “Elder Scrolls” series has been popular among gamers since its debut in 1994. There are still a few hundred players each month who actively play the game. With an active modding community, players are able to add more NPCs, quests, buildings, and other attributes to further enhance the richly detailed original game. Many people applauded “Morrowind” for its highly detailed game world and its considerably more challenging gameplay.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Originally released back in 2004 for PlayStation 2, “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” is the seventh installment in the franchise series. With a challenging open-world environment, San Andreas is a fictional state heavily based on California and Nevada. Despite the newer titles in the franchise, many people still consider “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” one of the pinnacle games of the entire franchise in terms of storyline, gameplay, and music. When a mod was created in 2006 that added multiplayer functionality to the game, the game secured its place among the most popular action-adventure titles of its decade.
Mass Effect 3
“Mass Effect” is a science fiction third-person shooter action role-playing game designed for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Eventually, Wii U was included among the compatible consoles. When “Mass Effect 3” came out in 2012, it was heavily lauded for its story, character, voice narration, and gameplay. It quickly became the best-selling title of the franchise. Despite the widely criticized endings, “Mass Effect 3” is still being played by those who love the gameplay.
Pokemon Go
With hundreds of new games being made available on mobile devices every year, gamers’ attention spans may be shorter than ever before. So it’s amazing that at over three years old, “Pokemon Go” still has millions of devoted players. The game was one of the first games to fully utilize a location-based augmented reality format. Unfortunately, due to the physical nature of the game, the Pokemon Go phenomenon has also led to as many as 29,000 injuries and 145,000 accidents nationwide since release. Despite this, “Pokemon Go” still attracts a very devoted fanbase.
Hundreds of new games enter the market every year. However, in spite of the intense competition, these four titles have retained their appeal through the years, with players returning to relive these games’ iconic features.
