I am not a fan of Bizarro. There I said it, it is out there and let the legions of people who think Bizarro is the end and be all of modern literature can commence the hating.

I am also not a fan of gratuitous gross-out subject matter so when I picked up a copy of Puckered by David Owain Hughes and Peter Oliver Wonder I was prepared to dislike the book.

Much to my surprise, it ended up being one of the better-written novellas that I have read in a long time.  Against all odds, this book works as a story which is a credit to the talents of the authors.  They walked a very thin line with the sick and oh so very depraved subject matter and managed to create a mini-masterpiece of sorts.

Here is the teaser for the book on Amazon.

Percy is kinky.
Percy is perverted.
Percy is a loner.
Percy is sneaky…

…But most of all, Percy wants to be left alone.

Whether it be a nagging mother or something from his past, it feels like he is always trying to escape something.
Will he be able to find his own peace, or will the real world catch up to him?
There will be blood.
There will be s**t.
There will be unusual sexual kinks.

But most of all, there will be murder…

Percy may take the prize of being perhaps the single most unlikeable protagonist I have ever come across in my reading history, which is saying something.  Still another feather in the author’s caps is that he is made very real and human complete with his kinks and flaws.

The cover for Puckered features an image of a filthy and extremely blood splattered public bathroom stall and it isn’t a spoiler to tell you that much of the ‘action’ in the books is centered in various bathrooms.  This is not a book for the faint of heart or easily offended.  This is actually an extremely offensive book so be warned, that being said it is also as I said one of the better-written things I have come across lately.  The two authors write seamlessly together and I look forward to more collaborations between them

I give this interesting little gem four bananas on our scale.

 Still don’t like Bizarro though…
